Civil 3D objects, when they see a "Byblock" property in their style, will use the corresponding property of the object itself. That's why Byblock is used all over the place when C3D needs to create a "Standard" style for you. It gives you a quickie method for say, changing your contour lines to dashed by clicking the surface and setting its linetype that way in the properties window.
